While I don't plan on writing any non-fiction or publishing any memoirs in the near future, I'm still baffled by the processes of publication. I don't like the 'publish or perish' mentality that's prevalent in academia, and I believe that the autobiography is about the most unreliable genre of literature that exists (besides, of course, fiction itself). Any chance that I can succeed in academia without enduring the trials and pains of publication?
